What is a sprinkler?

A sprinkler is an important component of an automatic fire extinguishing system.

When a fire occurs and the temperature rises, the sprinkler activates and discharges water to suppress the fire.

In fact, a sprinkler is a sprinkler connected to city water, each of which is closed by a heat-sensitive glass bulb, or a two-way metal connection with a flammable alloy, and controls the flow of water.

As mentioned, it is one of the components of automatic fire extinguishing systems. When it detects a fire, such as when the temperature exceeds a certain level, it discharges water. The sprinkler function is that the sprinklers have a glass bubble containing a heat-sensitive liquid. Which breaks independently when exposed to fire and causes water to be sprayed on the fire and control it.

Sprinkler application

Fire sprinklers are widely used, with more than 40 million of these pieces installed worldwide each year.

In buildings that are sprinkler protected and have standard design and maintenance, more than 99 percent of fires are controlled by sprinklers alone.

Statistics show that sprinklers have played a very effective role in controlling fires. What is more interesting is that in the UK, no building equipped with a sprinkler fire extinguishing system has ever suffered serious damage or death from fire.
Sprinklers are used in automatic water fire extinguishing networks, along with equipment such as piping, valves, and fittings, to protect people’s lives and property, as well as to prevent damage to structures and the collapse of buildings. The function of sprinkler systems is to control and prevent the spread of fire in the initial stages of formation until the arrival of firefighting forces.

Types of sprinklers

The word “Sprinkler” is an English and German word that refers to a set of valves, valves, and heat sensors. Today, water fire extinguishing systems have naturally become more complex and efficient. Since the establishment of Arca Fire, the company has been active in the field of water fire extinguishing systems and has designed and implemented many different systems over the past few decades.

Sprinkler: A device used to extinguish or control a fire. When its heat-sensitive glass bulb is heated to a certain temperature, it automatically operates and discharges water into the area it covers.

Pendant Sprinkler: A type of sprinkler that discharges water downward.

Sidewall Sprinkler: A type of sprinkler that, with a special deflector, has the ability to discharge most of its water in a semicircle and in the opposite direction to the adjacent wall.

Upright Sprinkler: A sprinkler that discharges water upward and after hitting a deflector, the water changes direction and returns to the ground.

Wide Coverage Sprinkler: A type of sprinkler that covers a larger area than other types.

Quick Response Sprinkler (QR): A type of sprinkler that has a glass bulb with a faster response time than standard response sprinklers. This type of sprinkler is used as a quick response sprinkler for certain purposes. The use of this type of sprinkler can result in a reduction in the design area and, consequently, a reduction in pump output and tank volume.

Residential sprinkler: A type of quick response sprinkler that has a glass bubble with a faster reaction time and is used to protect residential units.

Spray sprinkler: A type of sprinkler that has acceptable ability to control a wide range of different fire groups.

Hydraulically Designed System: A sprinkler system in which the pipe sizes are determined based on the water pressure drop calculations in the piping network. This method results in a significant reduction in pipe sizes and system piping costs.

Pipe Schedule System: A sprinkler system in which pipe sizes are selected through predetermined schedules. This method usually results in increased costs.

Wet Pipe Sprinkler System: A sprinkler system in which automatic sprinklers are connected to the water piping system and the water is discharged immediately after the sprinklers are activated.

Dry Pipe Sprinkler System: A sprinkler system in which automatic sprinklers are connected to a piping system containing pressurized air or nitrogen. When a sprinkler is activated, the dry pipe valve opens and water flows through the piping system.

Preaction Sprinkler System: A sprinkler system in which automatic sprinklers are connected to a piping system containing air (pressurized or non-pressurized) and the command to open the main water valve is issued by the fire alarm system.

Pressure regulating valve: A device designed to reduce, restrict, and regulate water pressure. Branchlines are pipes that directly supply water to sprinklers.

As is clear, there are various types of sprinklers, and in the article Introduction to Types of Sprinklers, we have explained each of them and their uses in detail.

ESFR sprinkler

The ESFR sprinkler is a product designed to extinguish and control large fires, such as warehouse fires. This sprinkler has high performance sensitivity, the ability to spray large droplets at a discharge rate 3 to 5 times that of other sprinklers, and the benefit of glass bubbles approved by international references, has unparalleled extinguishing power and speed, and is an irreplaceable choice for equipping spaces with the possibility of creating large and challenging fires.
Sprinklers are generally designed to suppress and control fires and provide emergency escape for building occupants. However, the ESFR sprinkler is specifically designed to extinguish fires in warehouse spaces, with its high sensitivity, ability to spray large droplets, and the ability to spray several times more water volume onto the fire in a single unit of time.

The difference between sprinklers

Installing ESFR sprinklers significantly increases the level of fire safety in warehouses. These sprinklers have up to 3 times the discharge rate of conventional sprinkler systems.

The water droplets emitted from this sprinkler are larger than other sprinklers and will be more effective in the fire extinguishing process.

In many cases, especially in warehouses with high stacking heights, you will have less need to install sprinklers inside the cages and cabinets. This will eliminate the problem of unintentional activation of sprinklers caused by moving goods.

This system can protect a wide range of warehouse goods from fire hazards. From low and medium flammability goods to high flammability goods such as plastic, paper and wood. Conventional sprinklers are mostly used for fire control. However, ESFR sprinklers, as their name suggests, are designed to completely extinguish a fire.

CMSA sprinkler

  • In some situations, due to the size and intensity of the fire, the temperature of the space increases dramatically. In these situations, when sprinklers are activated, the water droplets evaporate before reaching the fire due to the high temperature and heat, and can have less effect on the fire.

  • For this reason, it is sometimes necessary to expel larger droplets from the sprinkler. CMSA Control Mode Specific Application sprinklers are designed for this purpose, and with their special deflector shape, larger droplets reach the fire surface. These sprinklers, like the ESFR sprinkler, cover a smaller area than spray sprinklers.

Residential sprinklers

  • Residential sprinklers have a different water profile than other sprinklers. They spread the water in an elliptical pattern, with a higher percentage of the water falling on the walls.

  • In residential areas, due to the presence of untrained and unprepared people, the likelihood of suffocation is higher than in other places. By spraying water in all directions and on the walls, the volume of smoke and toxic gases inside the space is slightly reduced and the evacuation route becomes better visible.

Frequently asked questions

One of the main differences between sprinklers is the deflector. This part acts as a deflector for the water flow. The water flow is divided into smaller droplets after it hits the deflector. The smaller the water droplets are by the deflector, the larger the sprinkler coverage radius is. It also absorbs more heat.

The sprinkler piping system can be implemented in three ways. The selected method depends on factors such as the condition of the building, the conditions of the water sources, and the location of its entry into the building. However, the three common methods are the Tree method, the Looped method, and the Gridded method.

Inside the glass bulb of the sprinkler, two phases are used: liquid and liquid vapor. In most cases, alcohol is used in the liquid phase. The principle of operation is the expansion of the liquid inside the special bulb of this tool. As a result, the gas phase inside the glass bulb of the sprinkler is smaller than its liquid phase.

Sprinklers have glass bulbs containing mercury and are temperature sensitive. As the temperature around the sprinkler increases, these bulbs expand and burst, draining the water in the sprinkler.
