What is a volute pump?

A screw pump is a type of transfer pump used to move a variety of materials and fluids. This pump uses a moving screw to move materials from one side to another. Due to its simple structure, low energy consumption, ability to be used in chemical environments, and numerous other advantages, the screw pump is used in various industries, including food, pharmaceutical, chemical, refineries, and the oil and gas industry. Also, the ability to move materials with high concentrations and solid particles makes this pump a suitable option for use in various industries.

What is an industrial volute pump?

Industrial volute pumps, also known as spindle screw pumps or rotary positive displacement pumps, are designed as powerful industrial pumps for transporting high-pressure fluids in industrial processes.

A volute pump consists of a spiral rotor called a spindle that rotates inside a cylindrical housing. This rotor draws fluid from the pump inlet, traps it, and then directs it to the outlet with increased pressure.

The volute pump performs pumping operations with gentle and continuous performance, making it an ideal choice for transporting viscous fluids, abrasive slurries, and sensitive fluids that need to be prevented from applying shear forces to them.

Types of volute water pumps

The head and flow rate, and overall pumping capacity of centrifugal volute pumps, depend on differences in their design. All technical specifications of these pumps are available in the volute pump catalog, which you can access by contacting Shahr Pump Company.

For example, one type is the high-pressure volute pump. This type of pump has a more powerful electric motor and a larger impeller, making it ideal for increasing fluid pressure. Volute pumps are also known as multistage pumps, which are fully described in the article on multistage pumps.

These pumps are divided into three models based on the type of flow they create:

Axial flow: This type of pump is designed with propeller-shaped impellers and is therefore also known as a propeller pump. This type of pump is used when there is a need to increase the flow rate. The fluid enters the impellers through the inlet in parallel and exits in almost the same state, so the pressure does not change and remains constant.

Radial flow: In this model, the fluid enters the pump impellers through a hub. Then, with the help of special impellers located inside the pump housing, the fluid exits the pump radially.

Mixed flow: In this type, the flow is a combination of both axial and radial flows. The inlet vanes are aligned with the outlet path, but the discharge occurs in both axial and radial directions.

Function of the screw pump

In volute pumps, the impeller is located inside a spiral chamber. The fluid enters the chamber from the suction section of the volute pump and then passes through the eye section of the impeller. As the rotor and impeller connected to it rotate, centrifugal force is applied to the fluid, causing it to move towards the outer edges of the impeller in a radial direction. The design of the pump’s volute chamber and shell is such that its cross-sectional area and area gradually increase along the flow. Based on the laws of fluid science and the law of conservation of mass, we know that the cross-sectional area and flow velocity are inversely related. As a result, with a continuous increase in the cross-sectional area, the flow velocity decreases, which in turn increases the fluid pressure at the pump outlet.

Screw pump components

The most important components of a volute pump include the following:

  • Electric motor
  • Butterflies
  • Bearing
  • Coupling
  • Compartment
  • Mechanical Seal

Technical specifications of the screw pump

1- Pump capacity: Pump capacity indicates the volume of fluid or material that the pump is able to transport in a specific period of time.

2- Overflow pressure: Overflow pressure refers to the pressure that is created at the pump outlet and is used as a factor to regulate pump performance.

3- Pipe diameter: The diameter of the pump’s inlet and outlet pipes should be selected in proportion to the pump capacity, overflow pressure, and piping needs.

4- Maximum pressure: Maximum pressure refers to the amount of pressure that the pump is capable of withstanding, and if it exceeds the allowable limit, it may cause damage to the pump.

5- Structural materials: The volute pump can be manufactured from various materials such as steel, aluminum, plastic, and other materials and must be selected according to the appropriate operating conditions.

6- Corrosion resistance: These pumps are often exposed to chemicals and corrosives, so corrosion resistance is of great importance.

7- Motor power: The pump motor power must be properly adjusted according to the required pressure and volume for optimal pump performance.

Screw pump material

The material of a volute pump refers to the volute part of the body or casing. Depending on the various applications, the type of fluid to be transported, and the environmental conditions of the installation, the material of the volute pump can be different. The materials used in the volute part include cast iron, stainless steel, bronze, and various alloys. For transporting hard water, salt water, and similar conditions, 304 or 316 steel is usually used.

Application of screw pump

Among the applications of volute water pumps, according to their function, are as follows:

  • Pumping water and fluids from deep wells
  • Water transfer in agricultural lands
  • Pumping water across large elevation differences
  • Fluid transfer in large pools

Frequently asked questions

Plunger pumps, like other types of pumps, can have different types and naturally have different prices. The most important factors affecting the price of these pumps include things such as head and flow rate, inlet and outlet size, motor power and speed, available temperature, material of pump parts, brand and manufacturer, warranty period, exchange rate and its fluctuations, production standards, transportation and installation costs, etc.

The most important point is that for installation, it is better to use the help of professionals, but for guidance, we will mention some points. The main point before installing screw pumps is to choose a pump that matches your needs; because if you choose the wrong one, it may lead to failure and increased repair costs. Therefore, specifications such as the motor, impeller diameter and pump efficiency should be considered before installation.

Since the motor and pump are separate, they require precise alignment, which must be done carefully. Some of these pumps require a foundation and chassis, for which a concrete foundation is a good option.

When installing, it is best to have the pump close to the source to reduce the need for long piping. Also, the piping should be appropriate and high-quality pipes should be used. The pump should be installed in a location that has easy access and sufficient space for ventilation and maintenance.

In centrifugal pumps, there are two main parameters that determine the pump’s ability to move fluid height and volume, and they are known as head and flow rate. In a volute pump, the appropriate pump can be selected by having the head and flow rate values. Generally, these pumps use an electric motor with a speed of 1450 and 2900 rpm. The Atablock pump is one of the types of single-impeller volute pumps that is suitable for a head range between 0 and 100 meters, and if a higher head is required, stage pumps will be a better choice. By having the required head and flow rate values and referring to the volute pump overlap diagram, the appropriate pump can be selected.
