What is a fire hydrant? Examining the use and types of fire hydrants

next-01

A fire hydrant, also known as a hydrant valve, is a critical component of fire suppression systems. This valve is installed in different places so that in case of fire, firemen can connect their fire hose reel to the main valve of the valve to supply water.

The fire hydrant valve is directly connected to the local water network and is installed in various places including industrial and mining areas, educational centers, roads, and commercial parking lots. This installation in these places means that when a fire occurs, firefighters can use water to extinguish the fire quickly and effectively.

Types of fire hydrant valves

This model of valves is divided into two general categories: the first category, standing fire valve (or surface hydrant valve) and the second category, underground fire valve (or underground hydrant valve).

Imen Datis Asia Company, as a company approved by the fire department, in addition to consulting in order to obtain fire department approval, is an importer and supplier of all types of fire department equipment, including fire pumps, fire valves, fire alarm and fire extinguishing equipment from the best and most reliable domestic brands. And it is foreign. In this regard, Imen Datis Asia Technical and Engineering Company has the official representative of Safex Fire brand fire valves in Iran.

Standing fire hydrant valve

The standing fire hydrant, usually seen in red color in different parts of the city, is connected to the municipal water and sewage network. In emergency situations such as fire, firemen use this valve to supply water to their hoses. This type of valve is divided into two categories: dry standing fire hydrant and more standing fire hydrant, based on how they are used and their function.

Dry standing fire hydrant valve

In general, the upper chamber of a dry standing fire hydrant is empty of water and is therefore called “dry”. This upper part of the valve is installed above the ground level. When the main fire hydrant is opened, water enters the dry pipe. This valve has an automatic drain system that drains the remaining water in the pipe after closing the main valve.

The advantages of this type of milk include the following:
– Suitable for cold areas and areas where there is a possibility of freezing.
– It has a shock absorbing mechanism that prevents water from escaping in the event of an accident.

More upright fire hydrant valve

The upper part of the vertical fire hydrant valve is installed on the ground and the chamber of this valve is constantly filled with water. This type of valve does not have a main valve, but each outlet has a separate valve to control the flow of water. This valve is not suitable for use in cold areas that are subject to freezing, and due to the lack of a shock absorber system, it cannot prevent water from escaping in emergency situations. Also, these faucets contain pressurized water and to use, it is enough to let the water flow by just opening the corresponding faucet.

Underground fire hydrant valve

This valve is completely installed underground and is located in a chamber. The flow cut-off valve is connected to this valve. Also, this model includes a hose and a hose base, and its connection is flanged.

Fire hydrant valve installation tips

To install fire hydrant valves, certain rules and points must be observed:

  • Availability of standing hydrants: Standing fire hydrants should be easily accessible in buildings, factories and urban areas. These valves are a vital part of fire extinguishing systems and security against fire.

  • Prevention of misuse: To prevent unnecessary use or misuse of fire hydrants, a special tool designed as a wrench is used. These tools are provided to the firefighters to use the hydrants.

  • Prohibition of parking: It is forbidden to park cars within 3 to 5 meters of fire hydrants. This restriction is to ensure that the valves are easily visible and accessible to firefighters in an emergency.

  • Installation distances in high-risk areas: In areas where there is a high risk of fire, fire hydrants should be installed at a maximum distance of 75 meters from each other.

  • Installation in large fire centers: At least two fire hydrants should be installed in places where there is a possibility of large fire.

  • Installer at fuel stations: In gas and gas stations, it is mandatory to install two standing fire valves.

Fire hydrant components

The body of the fire valves consists of four main parts, each of which is explained as follows:

  • Upper cap: This part includes the valve’s operating handle or valve opener, lubrication hole, and flange plate, which is located on top of the valve.

  • Middle body on the ground: this part has watering holes with cover and connecting chain. Also, it includes normal flange and safety flange. The safety flange is used to protect the main valve from damage.

  • Underground middle body: This section consists of a pipe and two normal flanges along with a safety flange. The length of this section depends on the needs of the consumer.

  • Lower body: This part is equipped with a water control valve and an automatic drain system. Also, it has an opening to connect to the urban water supply network and two flange connections at its end.
