What is a pressurized source?

In water supply and water pumping systems, the pressurized reservoir (pressure tank) is a very important and essential component and is widely used in water supply systems, municipal water supply systems, and pumping systems.

A pressurized source, sometimes called a water pump tank or pressurized tank, reduces pump wear and tear by stabilizing the pressure in the water supply system, as well as reducing electricity consumption. A pressurized source can store water at a certain pressure and return it to the system when needed.

The role and importance of the pressure source

منبع تحت فشار، مخزن تحت فشار

Resources under pressure have a special role and importance, which include:

1. Water storage:

The pressurized source acts as a storage tank for water. It stores water when the pumps are not pumping water. This allows the system to continuously supply water to users, even when the pumps are not operating.

2. Pressure control:

The pressurized source acts as a pressure reducer.  When pumps collect water from a well or similar source, the water pressure increases as dynamic pressure.

If the pressure reaches a level that could damage pipes and equipment, the pressurized source will control this pressure and allow water to be supplied to the system consistently and at the appropriate pressure.

3. System balance:

The pressurized reservoir helps balance the system. When the pumps are running, the amount of water injected into the system increases and the pressure also increases. The pressurized tank maintains the balance of pressure and water flow in the system and prevents an unstable system.

In general, the pressurized source is one of the essential and important components in water supply and pumping systems, which plays an important role in ensuring the stability and efficiency of these systems.

Air pressure source

“Air Pressure Sources” refers to air pressure sources that are used to store and supply air in large galvanized tanks. These types of sources are mainly used to supply compressed air in a variety of industries and applications. These pressure sources usually have the following characteristics:

1. Galvanized Tank: The tanks used in these pressure sources are generally made of galvanized steel. Galvanizing means coating the surface of the tank with a thin layer of  zinc that prevents it from rusting and corrosion.

2. Non-separable connections: The components of these pressure sources are generally non-separable, meaning that the various components such as the tank, control valves, and fittings are permanently connected to each other.

3. Large volume: These pressurized sources have a large volume and can hold a large amount of air. This allows compressed air to be available for a long period of time.

Galvanized air pressure sources are commonly used in a variety of industries including manufacturing, automotive, construction, and other similar applications to supply compressed air and create pressure in pneumatic systems.

Diaphragm pressure tanks

This equipment in the fire pump booster is primarily designed to absorb water hammer caused by the switching on and off of the electric pumps. The volume of the diaphragm reservoir (expansion reservoir) can even reach 100 liters if the pressure switches of the fire pump booster are carefully selected and adjusted to the operating point of the booster pump.

It is important to note that the diaphragm source requirement only applies to booster pumps without jockeys. If a jockey pump is used in the booster pump, there is no need for a diaphragm source.

Diaphragm pressure tanks

These types of pressurized water sources are known as pressurized water sources and are used in municipal and residential water supply systems to provide pressure and maintain water pressure. Here is an explanation of how these sources work:

1. Source structure:   These pressure sources have a compact and sturdy structure. The diaphragm inside the pressure source acts as a key element.

The diaphragm is made of solid rubber and can withstand pressure.

2. Pressure regulation: When water is pumped from the source, the diaphragm combines the compressed air until the water pressure level reaches the required level, separating the lower suction of water from the higher suction of compressed air. This ensures that the water pressure inside the system remains constant and regulated within the desired range.

3. Water pressure control:  In reality, the diaphragm acts as an intermediate hole between the water suction and the compressed air. When the water pressure decreases (in fact, when the water consumption is greater than the supply), the diaphragm allows compressed air to enter the tank and increase the  pressure. When the water pressure reaches the desired level, the diaphragm again separates the air and water and the pump stops.

As a result,  diaphragm pressure sources are used as an essential and efficient device for regulating and maintaining water pressure in water supply and pumping systems and are highly effective in terms of efficiency and pressure stability.

Balloon pressure tanks

These types of pressurized sources are known as water pressurized sources with balloons at their ends and are used to regulate and control water pressure in water supply and pumping systems.

Balloon pressure sources are used as a useful and effective method for supplying and controlling water pressure in water supply systems in residential and industrial settings.

They are commonly used in water pumping systems as well as in places that need to provide stable water pressure.

Advantages of pressure vessels

  • Rubber diaphragm reservoirs have a much longer life span due to the smoothness of the inner wall of the tank against wear, rust, and decay.
  • Another advantage of these resources is that they are completely hygienic and have a beautiful appearance.
  • They control the pump when the water is pumped to turn it on and off.
  • These sources reduce the friction of the water pump and create the necessary amount of pressure for the outlet of the consumed water.
  • They have a resistant tube that prevents water expansion and does not change the taste of the water consumed.
  • They prevent pressure build-up and its dangers in the package system.

Pressure source pressure adjustment

The pressure of nitrogen gas and air in the pressurized sources depends on parameters such as the height of the building, the number of units and their area, the diameter of the pipe, etc. This pressure is usually between 20 and 45 psi or 1.4 to 3 bar. The pressure of the pressurized source before connecting to the piping system should be about 2 psi or a maximum of 10 percent less than the pump start pressure.

If the air pressure in the pressurized tank is lower than the allowable limit, it will cause the tube to wear against the tank wall, allowing it to rupture.

This low pressure leads to overfilling of the tube with water, and due to the low air pressure above it, the pump is constantly turned on and off, which causes the pump to heat up and eventually burn out. On the other hand, if the air pressure is too high, the volume of water stored in the tube is reduced, and excessive switching on and off of the pump damages it. Also, uneven installation of pressurized sources causes wear and tear of the tube.

Therefore, pressurized sources or tanks are used to increase water pressure in water supply systems in various residential, administrative, commercial, industrial, etc. locations.

Frequently asked questions

When the pump is at its maximum pressure, open the air valve above the pressure source, which is usually a needle valve with a cap. Press the pin of the needle valve and if only air comes out, the tube is most likely intact. If water also comes out, the tube is punctured and needs to be replaced.

If air comes out of the valves along with the water, it may be because air has entered the system due to a ruptured tube.

Water not coming out of the pressurized source when the source is full or half full.

Usually, the lifespan of a diaphragm source is longer than that of a tube source, but in return, it is much more expensive and more difficult to repair. Also, due to the lack of parts and after-sales service for diaphragm sources in the event of a breakdown, you will probably have to buy a new source. In addition, finding an original diaphragm source in the market is very difficult and it is most likely that a tube source called a diaphragm will be delivered to you.

By storing water at the appropriate pressure, a pressurized source reduces the need for frequent pump on and off. The larger the volume of this tank, the more the number of times the pump is turned on and off will be reduced. The advantages of having a pressurized source include reducing electricity costs, reducing pump depreciation, reducing depreciation of the building’s water supply network by controlling mechanical shocks caused by pump on and off, etc.
