Review of aerosol fire extinguishing system (Aerosol)

Aerosol fire extinguishing system is a type of gas fire extinguishing system based on very fine solid particles and gaseous substance.

The mechanism of this system is that fine aerosol particles are condensed and the output fluid gas is produced by a heat-generating reaction, and these particles remain in the form of vapor until the start of the extinguishing operation and exit from the equipment. Aerosol extinguishing agents are dense and cold inside the system and are discharged in the form of solid particles.

The aerosol fire extinguishing system is unlike the gas fire extinguishing system, which only has a gas extinguishing agent, and also unlike dry chemical extinguishing agents, which have relatively large powder particles. Aerosol fire extinguishers are introduced with very small particles with a size of less than 10 micrometers, and compared to other dry chemical extinguishers, they remain suspended in the air longer and leave less residue.

As mentioned, the aerosol fire extinguishing system is one of the modern fire extinguishing methods that uses special gases as a fire extinguishing agent. These gases are usually substances obtained by firefighting and extinguish the fire by reducing the concentration of oxygen or the rate of heat development.

Aerosol is one of these fire extinguishing gases that is used in some cases as an alternative to traditional fire extinguishing systems. This gas extinguishes the fire without harming the environment and humans. Aerocel gas fire extinguishing system is usually used in environments where there is a possibility of damage to sensitive materials or equipment, such as server rooms, data centers, industrial environments and power plants.

When a fire is detected, the system immediately releases aerosol gas into the environment to extinguish the fire by reducing the oxygen concentration or eliminating other factors needed to create and sustain the fire. The advantages of this system include fast operation, reduction of damage to electronic equipment, no need for direct contact with water (which in some cases may cause damage to equipment) and maintaining human safety. However, the need for proper installation and maintenance of these systems is very important to ensure their proper operation and reliability.

Types of aerosol fire extinguishing systems

Aerocel fire extinguishing systems are divided into three categories in terms of how they are activated, which are:

  • Electric aerosol capsule:

During the electrical activation of the aerosol, after sending the signal from the detector to the control panel, 24 V voltage is sent to the connector of the aerosol capsule, and then within 6 seconds, the entire aerosol in the cylinder is released.

  • Thermal aerosol capsule:

Aerocel capsules have sensors sensitive to a temperature of 475 degrees, and when the environment reaches this temperature, the aerosol shut-off is automatically activated.

  • Mechanical aerosol capsule:

Since the aerosol cylinder has a flame-sensitive wick, the aerosol is activated as soon as the smallest spark occurs and the contents inside the capsule are emptied within 3 seconds.

Aerosol fire extinguishing systems are also divided into two types in terms of concentration:

  1. Dense: having small particles of 10 micrometers
  2. Dispersed: having small particles of 10 micrometers under pressure

Also, the aerosol fire extinguishing system is divided into two models, portable aerosol and fixed aerosol, according to the type of use.
