Test and drain valve or test and drain valve is a type of ball valve and is one of the most used valves in fire extinguishing and firefighting systems of buildings, especially sprinkler systems. The test and drain valve is a type of 3-state valve and has three states: off, test, and drain. The valve orifice is 0.5 inch in test mode and 1 inch in discharge mode. In this equipment, a sight glass (sight glass) is installed so that the operator can see the current passing through the valve while testing the system. This valve is mainly used to drain water for sprinkler system repairs and maintenance as well as flow switch adjustment and testing.

The use of test and drain valve means that one part performs both test and drain work in the automatic fire extinguishing system, and this part also has an orifice and a side glass. If using a normal valve instead of a test and drain valve, we must use each of these parts separately (a valve as a test – a valve as a drain – orifice – side glass) in the fire extinguishing system.

Function of test and drain valve

The test and drain valve has three states: Drain / Test / OFF, and the operation of all three stages is as follows:

OFF state: With this state, the fluid flow is completely stopped.
Test state: In this state, the fluid passes through the orifice, which passes the flow rate of a sprinkler, and creates a function similar to breaking the sprinkler bulb.
In this case, the control zone system, which has a number of flow switches, should sense the water flow and inform the fire alarm control centers with the fire scenario in the building.
Also, this valve has a Sight Glass that shows the passage of the fluid flow. If the zone control system does not respond to the passage of the fluid flow, you can understand the fault in the valve control zone system in the test and discharge valve. It is generally assumed that the failure is in the flow switch of the water flow. Thus, the presence of Glass Sight on the valve is very important.
Drain position: When we want to drain the water in the pipe for the repair and service of the fire sprinkler network, we put the valve handle on the Drain position.
